A Scottish connection - William McAskie who returned from N Ireland to Scotland in 1820s

Then in early 19th Century, partly as a result of the famines in Ireland and partly because of the growing employment opportunities in the Clyde Valley and the Lanarkshire coalfields in Scotland, many Irish families were attracted to those parts of Scotland.

One was William, born in Ulster and married at Carluke in 1822 to Jean Burton, who was born in Lanarkshire.

Marriage of William and Jane 1822

Scottish descendants of this man have documentation which talks of brothers who went to N Ireland from Skye and established a Jute Mill near Castlederg, .This William was said to have been a toll-gate keeper, but became a coal miner in Scotland. He later settled in Lesmahagow and then Kirkmuirhill. He died on 16/03/1861 aged 58.

Death of William 1861

His father was shown as William McAskie a cotton weaver.
