Rev Dr John Dunmore Lang

Augustus Olbrecht was born in Prussia about 1814. He arrived in Australia from Berlin in 1838 at the Nundah Mission under the auspices of Reverend Dunmore Lang. Pastor Gossner had gathered a party, of 11 families of German Lutherans including August Olbrecht, a single shoemaker.

He married Martha Robins in NSW in 1842. They had daughters Grace born 1845, Mercy born 1846 and Catherine P born in 1848. Mercy died in 1847 and her sister Catherine P died in 1848. Their mother Martha also died in 1848 - perhaps in childbirth?

Later Augustus Olbrecht  married Charlotte Riley in 1848 in NSW   They had a son Ebenezer C A in 1849.

Albert Williams, San Francisco, California Pastorate, recollections of an early clergyman in Northern California between 1849 and 1854 ----------Mentioned in Chapter 2 ------- With this pioneer religious society were identified a goodly proportion of the leading commercial and professional men of San Francisco in the pioneer times. It is with no invidious distinction, with reference to many other worthy names, that mention is made of a few as representative of the many. Of individuals, professional and business men, in addition to those previously inserted ........... Aug Olbrecht

No record of Ann Olbrecht
can be found in 1880 Census
Photos sent to Australia were taken 8th  November 1864. They were of Augustus, Anne and Grace Olbrecht. - Annie Moore was Augustus new wife - Annie Moore - born in Ireland, cousin to the McCaskies in Sydney and the Nobles in San Francisco. (their mother was Moore)

** 1870 census - Augustus is shown as living with wife Annie (born Ireland) daughter Grace (born Australia) and servant Cathrain Taylor born Ireland circa 1845. Augustus had no occupation but had Real Estate valued at $50,000 and Personal Estate valued at $15,000.
Augustus died in 1880

Eliza McCaskie Noble's mother was Moore. Letters from San Francisco to Sydney at the end of 19th C mentioned Auntie Moore. Augustus had married Annie Moore who had emigrated from Ireland along with her cousins John and Elizabeth McCaskie on the Moffat in 1841
As John McCaskie and his wife went to San Francisco to the Gold Rush in 1851, and Elizabeth who married Thomas Noble arrived there as well, it is likely  that John, Elizabeth and their cousin Annie all went to San Francisco together.

possible connection?

Grace Olbrecht married Joseph R Pedler in 1871. Joseph was born in Nova Scotia Canada about 1840 and came to USA in 1854 - parents were both born in England. He was a  bookkeeper and then in 1900 Census he was an insurance agent. Grace and Joseph had no children.
In 1901 Directory Joseph  was a vineyardist living at 638 Haight .

Last known -
California Genealogical Society Probate Index has Grace Martha Augusta Pedler for 1906 - year of the earthquake

Another Pedler arrived from Nova Scotia 1854 the same year as Joseph so I suspect that they were brothers - Thomas C Pedler  was born May 1844 in Nova Scotia and married Bessie Kelley in 1869 - they had 6 children, 4 still with them in 1900 were Jean born 1880, Everett Kingsley born 1882, Louis born 1884 and Gladys born 1890. Everett died 24/11/1949 in Santa Clara
