The settlers hailed from Scotland. John Neilson and Janet Weir Neilson settled with their eight sons in Otonabee Township near Peterborough, Ontario in 1818. They were from Lanark Parish, Scotland. Their fourth son was John, and Hugh Neilson, was one of 2 sons born to John on 4 June 1803. Margaret McCaskie was Hugh Neilson's second wife. This is the only branch of the family which retained the original name Neilson. From the family history by D. Gayle in 1991 in her book, "The Neilson- Kith & Kin." |
Here is the family:- John, son of John and Janet Weir Neilson was born on 4 June 1803. He married Sarah Sinclair, born 1813 in Beauly, Invernesshire, Scotland They had 2 sons - Hugh Sinclair born in 1833 and John born 1836. John died in 1835 it is said when his cutter overturned and he hit his head on a rock Sarah then married his friend James Cameron born 1806, in 1837. They raised Sarah's 2 sons and their daughter Elizabeth born 1838.Sarah died in 1897. Hugh Sinclair and John married 2 sisters.
They had 3 children Hilliard Stanley,
Hector Cameron and James S. There may be photos of Hugh, Margaret and their sons - I am in touch
