George Marshall of Lanark Scotland was born in 1811. He married Elizabeth Russell on 14/11/1830 at Shotts, Lanark, Scotland

They had 10 children:-
Robert Dunlop born 1831, Thomas born 1834, George born 1836, Young born 1839, Alexander 1841-1851, William born 1844, Gavin born 1846, John 1849, Meck born 1853 and Alexander born 1855

Thomas Marshall
born 1834 was a Stone quarrier. He married Marion Marshall born 1838 at Blairdenhill Shotts on
12/12/1856 at Shotts, Lanark, Scotland – presumably his cousin.

Marion was the daughter of
Alexander Marshall (born 1812) and Janet Main (born 1809), married on  26/01/1838 in Shotts.

Alexander's parents were Alexander Marshall and Christian Scott and Janet's parents were Matthew Main and Marion Pettigrew

Marion's siblings were a) Alexander born 1841, b) Christina, born 1843 who married James Weir, born at Shottsburn Farm. His family also ran the Shotts Inn for generations c) Agnes born 1845, d) Matthew born 1848 who married Agnes Hamilton and e) Janet born 1850

Christina Marshall and James Weir of Shottsburn Farm had 10 children eldest son was John 1861-1943 who married  Martha Marshall Forsyth 1862-1918 in 1881 at Easter Baton, Harthill

John and Martha had 8 children - 3 went to Canada:-
Jessie Main Forsyth Weir b 1898 married William Marshall 1923 in  Port Coquitlam, British Columbia - 6 children
John Weir 1900-1990 went to Canada in 1928 - died 1990 in Didsbury, Alberta. He never married
Martha Forsyth Weir b 1889 married Gavin Weir Shearer in 1912 -  to Carstairs Alberta with their 5 children in 1928

Thomas and Marion had 15 children – Robert, Janet, Betsy, George, Marion, Margaret Russell, Christina, Alexander, Agnes, Mary, Jane, Thomas and Robert – born between 1857 and 1880. Betsy and George were twins born 13/07/1859

Alexander, born 31/08/1867 married Agnes Neilson Kirk born 27/05/1867 in Falkirk, Stirling - on 19/07/1889 in Law Carluke. In 1881 they were living at Deroshill Farm Shotts Lanark and he was employed as a farm worker. In 1890 they were living at 38 Simpsons Land Armadale and he was employed as a Contractors Carter. In 1901 they were living at 45 Westrigg Armadale and he was employed as a Colliery Brusher .

At the time of her marriage Agnes was employed as a farm servant. Her parents were James Kirk a ploughman and his wife Jane Hay - married 22/05/1851at Ratho Midlothian. Agnes had 4 known siblings Walter born 05/04/1860 Jane born 25/04/1862 Robert born 09/10/1864 Alexander born

Mary married Adam MacDougall on 01/06/1928 and lived in Slateford Edinburgh

Thomas born 23/07/1890 at 165 Springfield Rd Glasgow married Mary Craig Docherty, born 27/04/1890
at Law, Carluke, Lanarkshire. They married on
29/12/1916


At the time of his marriage Thomas Marshall was living at 29 Westrigg Armadale and employed as a Coalminer.

Mary was a domestic servant. at 19 Romford Sq Muiravonside, near Falkirk Sterlingshire at the time of her marriage. Nothing is known about Mary's father.

Her mother Elizabeth Docherty, born 05/05/1871 at 7 Waddells Row Wishaw, later married George Pollock on 22 May 1892 at Coalhill Arkansas USA.

George was a coal miner born on 09 Apr 1856.
His family had emigrated to USA from Cambusnethan, Lanark.

George and Elizabeth later returned to Scotland and were living at Tranent East Lothian in 1901 They had 2 more children Robert born 28/02/1900 and Elizabeth born 19/04/1902. After 1901 there is no further trace of George nor his son Robert - did they return to USA? 

Elizabeth Pollock married James Thomson Edmond on 27/12/1929 at The Manse Prestonpans, East Lothian. He later joined the Royal Navy.

Elizabeth Docherty Pollock died on 24/11/1956 at Newington Edinburgh.


The Dochertys

Elizabeth was the daughter of Cornelius (Neil) Docherty and Mary Ann Craig who were married at Airdrie Lanarkshire on 13/04/1856. They were both born in Ireland, Neil in 1829 and Mary Ann in 1831.

They had 8 children - all born at Cambusnethan Lanark:-  William b1857     Jane b 1860      Sarah b 1862      John b 1865    Mary Ann b 1867     Agnes b 1869     Elizabeth b 1871    and    James b 1873

Neil died on 23/12/1879 at Berryhill Rows Wishaw and Mary Ann died on 22/01/1904 at 11 Cross St Paisley

Neil's parents were William Docherty and Sarah Brook

Mary Ann's parents were John Craig b 1808 and Mary Sloan b 1809 - both from Ireland. They married on 21/11/1830 at Ballymena Co Antrim. Mary Ann died 12/09/1880 at Harthill Lanarkshire. Mary Sloan's parents were Robert Sloan and Mary Robertson

John Craig and Mary Sloan had 8 children:-  Mary Ann b 1831       Jane b 1832     Robert b 1833    John b  1836 Alexander b  1838    Daniel b 1841    Robertson b 1844    David b 1849  - 1st 6 were born in Ireland and the others in Glasgow Lanark . Robertson married Margaret Logan on 15/07/1864 at Milton Glasgow. He was an iron moulder in 1861



Thomas Marshall emigrated to Canada
but later returned to Scotland and  worked on the railways but had to leave because he was colour blind.

He moved to Musselburgh and worked for Bruntons Wire Mill. Thomas was an elder of the Kirk at Musselburgh.

Mary was  ill for a long time and Thomas looked after her, baked bread and cakes and did the garden.

 In fact he did the gardens for several other pensioners.

Thomas and Mary had a daughter Elizabeth Craig Pollock Marshall born 02/03/1921 at 162 Westrigg Blackridge. She married George Hunter on 25/04/1942. At the time of her marriage she was living at 8 Eskview Crescent Musselburgh and George at Douglas Memorial Hall Tait St Dalkeith.
