Forward to my Hood Family

My Lyons ancestors came from Scotland during or after the Ulster Plantation (1608-1640) .
Later the family of a descendant
Robert Lyons who married 
Jean McPhilamy fled to Scotland during the United Irishmen Uprising of 1798

My earliest known ancestor was George Lyon born about 1740. He married Kate Shields in Co Tyrone.  See website Henry Lyons of Co Tyrone and particularly Major Source part 1

There were 4 known children - Robert, Henry, another boy and a daughter - all born at the family farm in the townland of Farrest in the parish of Cappagh.

1 Robert born about 1755 married Jean McPhilamy  -  they had 3 sons:- 
a) George b 1777, b) William b 1780 and c) Robert b 1785 - all Ships Captains sailing out of Ayr Scotland

a) George was born 1777 and married Jean Gilchrist in 1802. 
b) William married Elizabeth Underwood on 30 Jan 1806 in Newton on Ayr Scotland They had 8 children. He died in Liverpool on 04 Apr 1826
c)  Robert was born 1785 and married Janet Murray on 13 Sep 1818 in Ayr Scotland - it was likely he who was drowned in Dublin Harbour on 27 Mar 1821. They had 2 children David born 1819 and Robina born 1821.

2 Another of George's and Kate's sons - name unknown - had a son who was in the Indian Army.

3.The daughter - name unknown - married a Mr Miller

4. Henry, born 1770 in Tattynure Cappagh Parish married Miss Barnwell (1772 -1855) - my 3rd great grandparents.

The Barnwell Family

The Barnwells were Norman Irish -  the name derived from Berneval. Sir Michael de Berneval was the first to settle in Ireland landing at Beerhaven in the county of Cork in 12th Century.
 
No information on the progression to Co Tyrone exists.
However other Barnwells have been found in Tyrone

Richard Barnwell married Levinia (Olivia) Buchanan and they had the following children - all in Omagh Co Tyrone:-
Robert b 1859, Martha b 1861, Andrew Thomas b 28 Jan 1864, William b 28 Nov 1866 and Jane Olivia b 28 May 1869

 

Miss Barnwell born 1772 had 2 sisters and a brother (a doctor who became very wealthy. He never married and left his money to his sisters)

Henry Lyons and Miss Barnwell had 10 children as follows:-

1 James S b 1790 2 Summer b 1792 3 Catherine  b 1796 4 Beattie b 1798
5 John b 1801 6 Henry b 1805 William b 1805 8 Robert b 1806
9 Thomas b 1809 10 Mary b 1817    

The inheritance left to Henry's wife allowed him to buy farms for all his sons. They were located between ten or fifteen miles of Omagh and Newtownstewart. Many were on the banks of the Strule River.

1 James married  Anne McCausland b 1808 on 07 Jul 1828 at Mountjoy Church and they lived at Farest.
He was resident in Farrest, 5 miles from Newtownstewart on the banks of the Strule River. He was Presbyterian

They had 11 children John, Beattie, Margaret, Phebe, Summer, Jane, Henry, Mary Ann, 2 others and James

Summer b 1834 married John Hutchinson - emigrated to Philadelphia. James was a Methodist preacher in Ireland for 34 years before emigrating to Vancouver Canada.

2 Summer married William Scott on 26 Oct 1830 - they lived in Gortin. She was Presbyterian

3 Catherine, of Tattynure, married Robert McConnell b 1810 on 07 Nov 1834 at Tattynure. They had 6 children She was Presbyterian

4 Beattie, of Carnony, married Anne Hutchinson on 13 Jul 1830 - they had 6 children and in 1852 the family of Beattie Lyons left for Philadelphia aboard the Superior including James Henry 11, Anne 10,  Beattie 8 and  Margaret  20 and Summer 17 daughters of James Lyons. 3 other daughters were born there viz Mary, Kate and AN Other. 
He was resident in Crooked Bridge about 6 miles from Newtownstewart on the banks of the Strule River. He was Presbyterian. Later they were resident in North Philadelphia c/o Chambers Presbyterian Church.  She was a Storekeeper. She was Presbyterian.

5 John, of  Correnary, married  Bessie White b 1805 at Killyclogher - on 30 Mar 1841 at Killyclogher. Her mother was Margaret Buchanan
They had 7 children:-  James, Andrew J,  Mary,  Harry,  William T,  Robert and  Samuel

James was single and lived at Correnary although his residence at his death in 1918 was High St Omagh

  His  Death Certificate. In 1892 he was elected as a guardian to represent Mountfield Forest East on Omagh Poor Law Union Committee

They had  7 children:-

John James 1884 -1934 was a dentist in Belfast.  Robert H G 1885 - 1947 was a doctor - married Louise Lloyd - they lived in Dungannon - they had a son Robert 1922 - 2008. Edgar Cecil married Margaret Trotter. She died in 1991 - they had 3 children.

Maud, Ethel and Louisa did not marry. Ethel 1891-1926 died in Ashover Derbyshire

6 Henry married Martha Pollock b abt 1821 at Reaghan Cappagh on 14 Jan 1841 - they had 8 children.
He was resident in the townland of Cavanacan in Tatnagole, 4 miles from Newtownstewart and also on the Strule River. Henry was Presbyterian.

7 William married 1st Martha Robinson b 1815 on 05/02/1835. at Killynure.
They had 7 children Catherine b 1836,  Matilda b 1838,  William b 1840,  Henry b 1842,  John b 1843,  Mary Anne b 1847 and  Eliza Jane b 1850

John married Matilda Beattie from Crosh on 11 Nov 1869 - they had 9 children including:-
son Matthew b 21 Sep 1878 emigrated to Australia and married Matilda Margaret Johnston from Letterburn, Baronscourt on 19 Mar 1913 at Currabubbula, New South Wales. Descendants settled at Maitlend NSW Australia
son Henry Beattie b. 1 Nov 1880 married Jane Fyffe, daughter of Samuel Fyffe of Lisnagirr, Co. Tyrone, on 4 May 1905. She was a daughter of Samuel Fyffe

William married 2nd Rebecca McFarland from Whitehouse, Ardstraw on 08 Nov 1855 at Drumlegagh Church Ardstraw
They had 5 children:- Anne Jane,  Rebecca Frances,  George,  Susan Elizabeth  and Catherine

8 Robert, my great great grandfather, married 1st a Miss Fulton b abt 1812 and went to live at Strawletterdallen, Ardstraw parish. Later he married my great great grandmother Anne Susan Stewart at Droit Presbyterian Church Lower Badoney, Tyrone. She was born in 1821 in Manchester, on 15/01/1846 . (See their story after the rest of the children of Henry Lyons and Miss Barnwell)

9 Thomas married someone b 1832  and lived in Carrickfergus
They had 2 children:- John W and a daughter .

10 Mary married James Robb b 1828 at Rathkelly Ardstraw - on 11 May 1849 at Mountjoy Church.
They had 2 sons John and Rev Robert Henry.

Rev Robert Henry Robb 1852-1937 emigrated to USA in 1870 and joined the Methodist church in 1875. He served for 42 years and was a prolific writer - lived in many places in Georgia

His son James Lindsey Robb was president of Tennessee Wesleyan College in Athens, Tennessee 1935-1936

My Great Great grandparents Robert Lyons and Anne Susan Stewart - see above

At the time of their marriage Anne was living at Strawletterdallen on her father's farm and Robert was farming the adjoining land. There is evidence of Robert receiving the land in 1830

Land there was farmed by the McConnell and Beattie families. Also a William Stewart is shown there in Tithe Applotment Records in 1834

As the land was adjacent there were 2 houses to choose from and Anne and Robert chose to live in one of them - the farm was later named Riversdale

Anne Stewart was the daughter of Hamilton Stewart, a doctor who had a practice in Newtownstewart, Co Tyrone. Anne lived in Manchester until she was 3 years old.

Anne Susan Stewart spent most of her life at Riversdale in Strawletterdallan townland where she lived with her husband. She was a strong Methodist who read the bible every day. Descendants of this family moved about a lot - their connections to the Methodist Church were significant - male members became ministers and female members married ministers.

Robert and Anne had 8 children Henry, Anne Jane, Katherine, Margaret, John James, Mary Elizabeth, Robert Stewart and Rebecca Frances:-

1) Henry Lyons married  Eliza Jane Beresford, from Florencecourt Co Fermanagh on 03/09/1872 - they had 4 children Beresford S, Robert, Anna Florence & Thomas Henry. Ulster Covenant Signatures 1912 

Beresford 1874-1952 married Anna Mary Kerr  in1902 - he was a Methodist minister. He was President of the Methodist Church in Ireland in 1942

Robert was in business in Enniskillen, Anna married Mr Rosendale from Florencecourt & Thomas Henry was first a teacher, then a Church of Ireland minister

2) Anne Jane (1851- aft 1911)  - she married William Hood (1845-1924) - in 20/12/1866 in Badoney Presbyterian Church - Witnesses to the marriage were Henry Lyons, her brother & James McCormack - William was a Methodist Church leader for Lisnatunny Ardstraw in 1901 - they were my great grandparents -

One of their 10 children was Louisa Kathleen Hood (1877-1952) who married Robert John Donaldson (1867-1946) from Cloghore Ballyshannon Co Donegal on 16/07/1903 at Newtonstewart Presbyterian Church. A Robert Lyons, probably her brother, was witness to their marriage. They were my grandparents see Hood and Donaldson trees

3) Katherine Lyons married James Frazer, a Methodist Minister in Newtownstewart on 20/03/1873 and they moved first to Ballyshannon Co Donegal then to Ballyjamesduff, Co Cavan. His father was George Frazer, a County Officer from Co Cavan. Before that Katherine had been instrumental in changing the name of the home farm from Strawletterdallan to "Riversdale" - they had 9 children - those known are: - Henrietta born 21/12/1875 at Ballyshannon then Eric, Ida, and Edith. Katherine is shown as a widower in 1911 census

Eric was a banker and his son was a doctor in England

Robert Lyons wrote in his day book:

Mrs Frazer's marriage dowry  paid 23/06/1874. Mrs Frazer  at home again 21/07/1875

4) Margaret Lyons 1852-1909 married Robert George King b 1855 - on 16/12/1886 - he lived in Baillieborough Co Cavan - he had a successful business there. She died on 03 Apr 1909 and he emigrated to USA

Ulster Covenant Signatures 1912  They had 6 children:-

Winifred, Robert John(Jack), Henry Frederick(Harry), Violet, Ethel Margaret & William Edward(Ted).

Winifred married Clifford Cox, a customs officer - they lived in S England

Jack (1893 - 1982) & Harry (1894 - 1971) both emigrated to New York and worked as managers for the Atlantic and Pacific Company (a railroad company) then retired to Florida.  Harry married his cousin Anna Margaret Lyons, daughter of John James Lyons. Jack's wife was Mary and they had 2 children Maurice and William

Violet b 1897 married a Mr Sheehy, customs officer and they lived in S Ireland

Ethel married a dentist called John ? - they lived in Glasgow. She later died in childbirth.

Ted emigrated firstly to Australia, then USA, where he worked for Atlantic Pacific Co

5) John James Lyons(1853 - 1944) married Bessie McFarland - they had 4 children:-
Robert Stewart b1892, Elizabeth Mary Maude 1894-1968, Thomas McFarland b1896, Anna Margaret b1897

Bessie McFarland was born on 24 Oct 1866 Plumbridge, Co Tyrone - her parents were Thomas McFarland and Elizabeth Henry who married on 04 Feb 1864 in Upper Bodoney, Tyrone

Thomas McFarland Lyons emigrated to New South Wales where he married Clarice Edna Kiss in 1927  He had 3 children. He later returned to Ireland to run the home farm.

Elizabeth Mary "Maude" also emigrated to Australia where she married John Anderson on 17th May 1934 in Melbourne Victoria. He was born about 1899

6) Mary Elizabeth Lyons married Edward Knox (1849 - 1935) from Belleek, Fermanagh on  08/10/1878

Edward's sister Mary Ann Knox married Samuel Donaldson from Stranorlar in 1861. Samuel's sister Hannah married John Donaldson from Belleek in 1857

Mary's & Edward's daughter Lil married Christy Ross. They had 2 children, John & Doreen. John had a veterinary practice in Rosscor & Doreen married Fred Skuce from Cork.

7) Robert Stewart Lyons (1857-85) was deaf & dumb - he attended the Claremont Institution for the Deaf and Dumb, Monkstown, Co Dublin  He wanted to enter the ministry for the deaf and was appointed by the Archbishop of Cork in 1881 for that job. In the same year he went to Washington DC, USA, to attend the 'National Deaf-Mute College' (now Gallaudet University). However he became ill with Kidney Disease and Rev. Gallaudet the principal of the college sent him home - he died shortly after his return and is buried in C of I Newtonstewart - he was 28. His funeral was one of the biggest for many years

8) Rebecca Maggie Lyons married George Alexander Condlin on 14/04/1891

In the Stewart/Lyons photos is one of
Carolina HG Stewart and Anna Maria Stewart, taken on 1st July 1866 at Brookvale. Photographer's address was Coleraine Co Derry - there is a Brookvale at Coleraine Rd Portrush. Could these be nieces of Anne Susan Stewart?

Robert Lyons wrote in his day book:-  

1862 Cash paid to James Stewart - going to America  - £141 - for stock .
 - he arrived
23 May 1862  on the Victory - aged 20

Robert helped pay for and construct his portion of the road from Newtonstewart to Gortin

In 1892  Robert was District Magistrate - he died in 1894

Robert Lyons who died 18/07/1894 Tyrone
This will was witnessed by James Lyons of Correnary. This James Lyons of Correnary is listed in on page 28 of the Tombstones of the Omey. James died in 1918 and his father John died in 1855.
It seems likely that John and Robert were brothers. Both John and Robert also had sons named Henry
