The Family of Brown(e)
Creevy Ardstraw Co Tyrone
(The Browns lived in the next farm to the McAskies in Creevy, Ardstraw - later see the history of Matilda Brown and William McAskie)

Two brothers named Browne settled in Co Tyrone previous to 1688. They were of the Covenanting party in Scotland and left that country during " the persecutions."
They settled near Maghry Lock. (This is Magheralough) There, the descendants of both lived for a century, and the descendants of one of these brothers is there yet One of the brothers was named Andrew, the other posiibly David.

Andrew Browne married Ms. Mitchell and had the following children:

Mathew Browne 1775-1832 - married Jennette McCaskey 1777-1848 in Tyrone -  moved to Pennsylvania.- left eight children.

Mathew Browne was born in Ireland in the year 1775. There he married Jeanett McCaskey a few years before they sailed for United States. They had one child Margaret when they left Ireland and buried an infant in the sea. Their trip occupied 14 weeks. They settled on the Kunts farm in Ligonier Twp. Near where the Cook (Coke?) works are now located. Where Andrew was born. He took a lease on land now known as the Culbertson Ramsey farm on which Ft. Palmer was built. He cleared this land and wove linen cloth for his neighbours while they in turn made rails and did grubbing for him in payment for his services. Some of his cloth sold as high as 59 (?) in those times when money was scarce. At the end of 7 years they accumulated $400 and for this sum he bought the 150 acre farm one mile east of Ft. Palmer which my brother Mathew now owns. And which was valued at $4500 in the year 1890. Jane and David were born on the old Ramsey farm the children following were James, Mary, Robert, Elisa and Joseph. He was a man of medium height black hair and eyes, a worshiper of God, he was a good calculator and fairly successful in business. Never undertaking more than he could arrange for. He commanded great respect among his neighbours and friends. He was a member of the associate reformed Presbyterian Church near Ft. Palmer. Was always cheerful, full of jokes and enjoyed the company of the young greatly. He died 5/8/1832. Jeenie McCasky his wife was born in Ireland was medium sized dark hair and eyes an excellent woman, gentle, benevolent, friendly, hospitable and an excellent affectionate mother. A few year before her death she became totally blind. After my grandfathers death she lived the old home farm with my uncle Robert who had charge of same. She frequently spent weeks with the other children. She died 5/1/1848.

James Browne, along with his daughter, Margaret, and his son, David Lyons, went to America in 1812 on the American ship, "William P. Johnstone." They were captured by the British ship, "Belerophen," during the war of 1812, and were detained in St. Johns, Newfoundland for three years, until 1815, when they settled in the Ligonier Valley, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. Scott's great great grandfather was named Andrew, who was a man with a family of his own, say about 1720. He had two sons and nine daughters. His sons were Andrew Jr., and David. Andrew Jr. was Scott's great grandfather. David had two sons, David and John. John was drowned emigrating to America, and his widow, with three children returned to the old neighbourhood; beyond which up to 1812, nothing is known. The other son, David, married but left no children. (see note below)

From Scott Brown

A genealogy by Amos Finkbine states:-

A James Browne, and his brother, came from the West of Scotland between 1660 and 1688 and settled near Maghry Lock. This James had a son, Andrew Browne, who had a son Andrew Browne Jr. Two of Andrew Browne Jr.'s sons are James Browne, born 1752 in Ardstraw, and Matthew Browne, born 1775.

From
Scott Brown:- Matthew, who married Jane McCaskey, is my line. The information I just received comes from a descendant of James Browne's line who was born 1752. A large part of that line settled in Chester County, Pa., near Philadelphia.
