1829 Freeholders Register for Co Tyrone - a Charles Stewart of Whitehouse registered Joseph & Sara had 9 children:- 1
Elizabeth Mary, 2 Mary Stewart, 3 John, 4 Margaret, 5 Jane
Ann, 1. Elizabeth 1872 - married Thomas Forbes of Clare. 3 John 1875-1957 married Ruby Gourley 1885-1978 of
Tober Ballindrait - had 4 daughters including Sarah Helen Irene (Renee),
Mary Henrietta Olive & Hester Joan & a son Robert who died aged 3 years. John had a drapery business in Castlederg and after his death Joan 1921-1994 ran the business. She married in 1960 to Jack Scott 1921-1994. Jack was the proprietor of a shirt factory

married William John Thompson, later a vet from Portstewart in 1940
Thanks to Castlederg and it Red River Valley Renee married Edward C H Knox from Derry in 1944. She died in 2006 The Post War period brought more prosperity to Castlederg. A pyjama factory providing steady employment was established in 1947 in converted premises at Main St with Mr Jack Scott from Londonderry as the manager and later in 1949 proprietor. He was a business of repute who showed concern for his employees and assured his customers of good value and good workmanship. He extended production to manufacture hospital gowns and shrouds. Sadly this business did not survive long after Mr Scott’s retirement in late 1970s. Production came to an end in 1988 Ulster
Covenant Signatures 1912 5. Jane Anne1878-1900 died of TB 6 &7 Sara Margaret 1881 -1962 was engaged twice but family commitments made her remain single. Later she & her brother Joseph, 1890- also single, retired to live in Bangor at the seaside.
9 Isabella Henrietta 1891-1947 became a nurse & went to England. She had a son Norman Bolton born 1915. She married Jack Dunn 1906 - on 16 November 1933 in Cheltenham Gloucestershire.
The Stewarts Sam Stewart was the brother of Sara who married Joseph McAskie of Whitehouse. He and his
family were often at Whitehouse as the children were nephews and nieces of Sara. The
children all had the distinctive brown eyes of the Stewarts as did many of the succeeding
generations of McAskie. viz Minnie McAskie Smith, Hettie McAskie Dunne, Maggie
McAskie Bangor, Marion Smith Davies. |
