Grace Marshal married Alexander Voy on 30/12/1859 in Coldingham, Berwick. He was born about 1833 and his parents were William Voy and Margaret ?

In 1881 Alexander was farm steward of Blackadder Mains Farm Edrom Berwickshire and he and Grace were living at at Blackadder Mains cottage. James Hunter, her father, was living with them.

David married Margaret Thomson from Moram Haddington in Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh. She was the daughter of James Thomson and Margaret Thomson who married 29/05/1825 at Moram Haddington

Two other children were Jean born 03/10/1830 and Janet born 15/02/1836

They married on
21/06/1861. One known child was George born 18/03/1864.
In 1881 census they were living at
39 Caledonian Crescent, Edinburgh. David was working as a mason and George his son was an apprentice in an architects office.
George married Annie Bennet on
31/12/1886 at Gorebridge, Midlothian

Annie was born in Temple Stobhill Gorebridge.
In 1886 George was a mason foreman and Annie a domestic servant.

They had 2 children - David Tom born 18/07/1887 at Canongate Edinburgh and George born 20/09/1889.

George and Annie divorced on 12/04/1898 – Annie was living at Bennets Land Gorebridge. George died on 29/01/1914 in Edinburgh
In 1901 census Annie was living with her 2 sons and working as a laundry maid.


David Tom
born 13/07/1887 married Helen Thompson Sinclair from Penicuick. Her parents married on 11/08/1881 - he  was Henry Sinclair, a Paper worker and she was Marion Thompson. David Tom and Helen lived at Long Niddry - he was a master plumber. He died on 13/07/1971 - son George present at his death

She was living at The Loan Musselburgh Rd Dalkeith Midlothian  He was living at Hunter Sq Gorebridge Midlothian
He was born
20/09/1889 at West Norton Place Abbeyhill Edinburgh. He died  02/09/1924 at Gothenburg Buildings Dalkeith of a cerebral tumour. His WWI service had been as a private in 6th/7th Battalion Royal Scots Fusiliers.
In civilian life he was a carter - Co-Op grocer's vanman

Isabella was the daughter of James Asher -  from Elgin - and George was a carter by profession. He died 07/09/1924 at the age of 34 of a brain tumour. Before her marriage Isabella was first a housekeeper to a doctor in Roslin, Midlothian. Next she was housekeeper for minister Wallace in Traquair in the Borders. After their marriage George and Isabella moved to Dalkeith

Her step sister Helen Asher married Alexander Whitelaw from Inveresk With Musselburgh - he had a grocer's shop there. Isabella went to work for her brother-in-law. Later the Whitelaws expanded by taking over a grocery business in Dalkeith. Later still they had a farm near Dalkeith, another shop in Black Shiels and a Dog Boarding kennels near Dalkeith.

After George died Isabella supported her family by becoming caretaker of the Church Hall  in Tate St Dalkeith.

They had 3 children:-

1 Isabella Lothian Lockie 1914-1998 – she was assistant headmistress at Musselburgh Grammar and lived in Portobello - she had completed her education with an exchange to Heidelberg in Germany .Ella moved from Dalkeith with her mother and Jim to live in Edinburgh in 1953. She did not marry

2 George 1916-1997. WWII service first as Cpl in RAOC - served in Orkney and Shetlands, then England where he transferred to REME and became a sergeant armourer attached to the Parachute Regiment. Afterwards he served in Norway and then Palestine. He received a certificate signed by the King of Norway for being one of the soldiers involved with the liberation of Norway. Afterwards he worked as a cycle mechanic then later for Bruntons Wire Mill and lived in Musselburgh - more about George's family below

3 James Asher 1919-2004  He served in WWII
and was also in Palestine. He later worked in Bruntons Wire Mill and lived in Portobello
Jim Hunter Portobello

George 1916-1997 married Elizabeth Craig Pollock Marshall  (Lily) in 1942. They lived in Musselburgh Midlothian.They had 3 sons, first twins and then another son.After the war George was a cycle mechanic but later joined Bruntons Wire Mill in Musselburgh with Jim. They made the wire ropes which hold up the Forth Road

George died in 1997 and Lily in 1998.

I married one of the twins, George. We met in Germany and married in Singapore in 1965
