We are members of this Club which is just 2 miles from our house. It is a wonderful course - all the more so because of how it has been created.

Pumpherston Golf Club:- Oil Refinery to Golf Course - the 18-hole course is superb.

Opening 31/05/2002  An industrial site at Pumpherston near Edinburgh is said to be where the world's first oil refinery was set up in 1883 (extracting paraffin from oil rich shales on the site). It later became the location of a BP oil refinery and then a detergent factory which closed in 1993. By that time the site had become one of the most contaminated in the country. But BP has spent over £6 million clearing the land and bringing in tonnes of new soil. In conjunction with Sport Scotland and West Lothian Council, and with financial help from the National Lottery and the Royal and Ancient Golf Club, the area has been transformed into an extension to Pumpherston Golf Club. The club is embarking on an expansion programme and is setting out to encourage local children to play the game.
