 In the 18th Century, the McAskies came from Scotland to settle in the Derg Valley in Creevy townland.

In the late18th Century there were 3 known siblings born at Creevy:-
 
A Isabella (1785-1823)

B James (1798 - )

C John (1800-1869)
 
A Isabella 1785-1823  married Rev James Caldwell and went to USA
 
B James born about 1798 remained at Creevy  He married Annie Moore(1781-1879) about 1817 .
 

They had possibly 9 children of whom 6 are confirmed:-

1 John, Elizabeth, Joseph,  James, William and Margaret  7,  8  and  9

 
1 John 1818-1895,  and his sister 2 Elizabeth  went to Australia in 1841 on the Moffat

John met Catherine Haliburton-Nealings and they married  in 1850 in Wesleyan Chapel York St Sydney

Catherine had arrived from Cupar in Fife Scotland in 1848 on the Canton. They lived at Balmain Sydney

In 1851, John, Catherine & Elizabeth went to San Francisco. John and Catherine returned to Sydney in 1857 and Elizabeth remained. She had married a Thomas Noble and raised her family there.
 
3 Joseph became a Presbyterian minister and went to Philadelphia USA   He married his first wife in Donegal in the 2nd Presbyterian Church on 19th November 1850 (She was Isabella Henry from Donegal whose father Thomas Henry was a saddler) and the witnesses were Robert Scott and Oliver Stewart. He married his 2nd wife in 1864 in Castleblayney Co Monaghan. She was a daughter of Charles Hamilton. Rev Joseph later went to Philadelphia in 1881. He died in 1891 and left a wife and 6 children and was buried at Mount Moriah Cemetery Philadelphia - had preached at Central Presbyterian Church Norristown and Port Carbon in Schuylkill Co Pennsylvania

4 James 1829 -1859 emigrated to Morpeth NSW Australia in 1849 on the Sea.
He was a policeman in Morpeth and  married Mary Lapsley from  Timahoe, Queens County, Ireland  who had come out on the Maria in 1850.

4 William was the son who remained at home and he married Matilda Brown in 1859. He was a Clergyman/Farmer and in 1905 was Rural District Councillor.

 
Marriage certificate for William McAskie and Matilda Brown, 13th July 1859. William's occupation is given as farmer, and both are resident in Creevy. The marriage ceremony was performed in Drumlegagh Presbyterian church by the Reverend Brown, and the witnesses were Samuel Gailey and James McAskie
 
Matilda was the 8th child of David Brown 1771-1861 of Creevy  - his parents were David Brown and Arabella White

Matilda's mother was Martha Gealy who was one of the Gayley clan which originated in the Isle of Bute off Scotland. Their history is well documented in their family annals & also in websites

They had 4 known children Matilda Jane born 1884, Margaret Esther born 1885, William James born 1888,
Oliver 1901-1979.

William James married Rebecca M ? 1891-1964 in Urney. He died 1969

c Matilda (1863-1936), d Henrietta (1864-1957) & e Joseph (1866-1944) did not marry. Henrietta was a scholar & a prolific reader. Joseph took over the farm & was a JP

f William James (1868-1937) was a Presbyterian minister - educated QCQ - Queens College Galway, ACB Assembleys College Belfast, BA(RUI)1890; licensed at  Strabane 3 May 1893; ordained at Newtonparry (Seskinore) 31 July 1894  - sister, Matilda was his housekeeper - then in 1912 he married Mary Louisa Cargin, daughter of Alexander Cargin, merchant from Dromore and sister of Rev J.A. Cargin of Ballyalbany.

(Rev JA1872-1957 educated QCB - Queens College Belfast ACB Assembleys College Belfast BA (RUI) - Licensed Belfast, Ordained Ballygawley 14/12/1898 resigned 22/05/1906 Installed Ballyalbany 19/06/1906 resigned 30/06/1945 He married on 18 Jul 1945 Mabel Margaret Hamilton daughter of Rev James Hamilton of Broomfield)

William James left to serve in Forces in 1916. He was Clerk to Omagh Presbytery 1899-1937

Obituary in "The Witness"  Death of Rev WJ McAskie, Clerk of Omagh Presbytery.

The death of Rev WJ McAskie, BA Seskinore, Co Tyrone, Clerk of Synod of Derry and Omagh and Clerk of Omagh Presbytery is announced. He was the son of the late Mr William McAskie of Creevy, Castlederg.
Mr McAskie is survived by his wife, one brother Joseph McAskie, two sisters, Mrs McBeth, Ballindrait and Miss McAskie, Creevy.

He was educated at Castlederg and took his Arts Course at Queens College Galway and Theological Course at Assemblys College Belfast. He was ordained and installed at Seskinore 41 years ago.
Almost for the same period he discharged duties of Clerk of Omagh Presbytery and several years ago he was called upon to fill the office of Clerk to the Synod of Derry and Omagh.
He also served in many of the Committees of the General Assembly

 David 1870-1937 married Jane White born 1870 in Derrygoon on 22/01/1908 and he became a doctor in England first
Tottenham & then Portsmouth.

His son Lionel  1908-1996 also became a doctor  in Rochdale Lancs

6 Margaret married George Rutledge from Garvetagh Ardstraw on 17th September 1857. Minister was Rev Joseph her brother and witnesses were Samuel Gailey and John Irwin

7, 8, 9 According to family history two other brothers went to USA, one called Robert. Another sister went to NSW - references made to Aunty Moore in letters to San Francisco  
 
I have traced a William McCaskie, born Co Tyrone, who emigrated from Liverpool to Philadelphia in 1847. He arrived in April 1847. His age was 25 and filed for naturalisation 29/08/1854. His witness was Thomas Pratt.

From 1860, 2 brothers William C and Robert were living in New York - born Ireland and working as painters.


In 1860 census they were living in Ossining Westchester

William was married to Bridget and with 2 children Mary E born 1856 and William J born 1858

By 1870 William had 2 more children Edward F born 1864 and Charles W born 1868

By 1870 Robert was married to Margaret and had children Margaret born 1867 Robert born 1868 and John W born 1869

By 1880 there William had another daughter Ellen born 1873

Robert had one more child Ida born 1875. Child John W married Mary Tracy and there were 2 known children Donald W b 01/08/1898 and Helen born abt 1903
